If you have recently discovered that you are pregnant, your first question might very well be, “When am I due?”  Dating your pregnancy can be a little confusing.  Here is a simple introduction to pregnancy terminology and dating your pregnancy.

Gestational age refers to how long it’s been since the first day of your last menstrual period or LMP.  Generally, gestational age starts two or more weeks before fertilization.

Fertilization Age refers to how long it has been since the sperm met the egg.

Gestational age is used by medical professionals to calculate your due date.  Your due date will be 40 weeks from the first day of your last period.  A normal pregnancy range is 38 to 42 weeks.

Sometimes it is hard to remember when the first day of your last period happened so, an ultrasound can help medical professionals to calculate your due date as well.
